The Trump Foundation has been under investigation by a federal grand jury since September for alleged conflicts of interest.
The investigation comes after a report from the New York Times last week that Trump’s children and their businesses are among those who have received millions in foreign donations from the Saudi Arabian government.
The report prompted the White House to release a statement Monday saying that the Trump Foundation “is fully compliant” with federal and state laws and regulations.
The president’s sons, Eric and Don Jr., also gave at least $1 million in donations to the foundation.
But according to The New York Post, the Trump family’s charitable arm has paid a fine of $20,000 to a Pennsylvania prosecutor in the Trump Tower building in 2013 for failing to report $7.9 million in foreign contributions, despite being required to do so by the IRS.
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The foundation’s first annual report on Oct. 3, 2016, showed that Trump, his children, and two business partners had given $1.9 billion to charity, including more than $3 billion to veterans charities.
That’s a lot of money.
Trump has called the reports “fake news” and said they unfairly target his foundation.
The $25,000 fine was issued to a prosecutor who had investigated the Trump Organization in 2011, according to a copy of the court document obtained by The Washington Post.
In a statement to the New Yorker, the prosecutor said he had no further information on the case.
The Times reported that the FBI was investigating the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., as part of a criminal investigation into whether foreign government donations were improperly given to charities in violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
The New Yorker reported that Trump and his family were “deeply embarrassed” about the report.
The paper said the investigation had been opened after the Trump campaign released a statement saying it was “not aware of any foreign government donation to the Trump or Trump Foundation in violation” of the law.
